speakable urges flickering inside him. Yelping, panting, Gretchen lay there, struggling to keep her legs apart.
The tips of his fingers pressed into the soft fur, and suddenly Gretchen let out a high-pitched yowl.
In the next instant she was up and going pell-mell toward the back door, howling all the way. But she never made it. The rope stopped her in midair with a savage snap.
Matty went over to her.
She lay on the grass just short of the steps, her eyes opened wide, her head at a crazy angle.
Inside the house, sounds of somebody coming. Matty ran back into the woods.
From someplace deep within the black, he heard Mrs. Starkey cry out.
"Gretchen? Gretchen! Oh my God!"
